Our Group Classes
Diabetes Management Class I&II
Our diabetes management classes are taught over two days and cover a wide variety of
topics. This ADA accredited program provides you with the skills to manage diabetes
on a daily basis, as well as for years to come. Sessions include energetic, professional
presentations designed to convey a wealth of information in a manner that is easy to understand.
All visuals and lecture materials are provided to you in a comprehensive manual that will prove
to be an excellent resource for both diabetes care and community resource information. Topics
covered in class include: Insulin Therapy, Blood Glucose Monitoring, Oral Medications, Acute and
Chronic Complications, Sick Day Self Care, Taking Care of Your Feet, Stress Management, Exercise,
Family and Social Support, Goal Setting, Coping Skills, and Living With Diabetes.
Nutrition Class
The nutrition class is also accredited by the ADA and is taught by registered and licensed dietitians.
Understanding the meal plan, the reasons behind meal planning, and ways to successfully incorporate
dietary changes into your lifestyle are critical components of diabetes management. This class explains
the science behind carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and how they work in your body. Hands-on exercises allow
you to practice with food labels and food models. Topics covered in class include: Medical Nutrition Therapy,
Individualized Meal Planning, Carbohydrates, Low-fat Cooking, Reading Food Labels, and Achieving Optimal
Nutrition Through Meal Planning.

Individual Diabetes Instruction
You will have the opportunity to meet with the diabetes educators and dietitians on an individual basis.
The appointments will focus on your particular concerns including management of blood sugar, blood pressure,
and cholesterol, weight loss, and any other aspects of diabetes care that you wish to pursue. The dietitian
works with you to create a healthy meal plan that is catered to your individual needs and lifestyle. These
one-on-one sessions allow individual attention for questions about diabetes care. 'Am I monitoring my blood sugar correctly?'
'How does my meter work?' 'How do my medications work?' 'How can I make my favorite dish part of my meal plan?'
Individual attention allows you to make immediate changes and get immediate results.
Training on Blood Glucose Meters
Training is available to all patients on any blood glucose meter. Meter training is provided by our certified
diabetes educators, our registered dietitians, or our diabetes coordinator. Special features of the machine
will be discussed as well as techniques specific to each instrument.
Insulin Training
Every patient starting an insulin regimen will receive appropriate training by one or more of our professional staff.
Insulin regimens consist of a thorough explanation of the insulin prescribed by your endocrinologist, injection techniques,
and the proper use of insulin syringes, pens, and pumps. A review of pertinent issues such as hypoglycemia, sick day treatment,
and blood glucose monitoring is completed for every individual. Hands-on instruction allows participants to practice under the
supervision of a professional. Patients work closely, both in person and over the phone with our professional staff, until
blood sugars are within their target range.
